Friday!

January 11, 2008

Tomorrow the Freeman reveals its citizen of the year.  My money is on Marty Frank since he died last year.  Maybe it will be Andrew Ruggeri and Drew Vallozzi. developers/owners of the Clarke Hotel and Black Trumpet for changing the face of downtown, though I would probably wait until the places at least open before doing that.  Any other guesses?

Speaking of the Clarke Hotel and Black Trumpet restaurant The Freeman has a progress report.   The restaurant should debut this spring and the hotel will follow in summer.

Ok, I still don’t see the appeal of Huckabee but his comment last night just made me like him even less.  When asked about Iran harassing us vessels he said “Be prepared, first, to put your sights on the American vessel. And then be prepared that the next thing you see will be the gates of Hell, because that is exactly what you will see after that.”   I am troubled by this comment because it assumes that people in the Iranian army are inherently evil and are all going to hell.  Iran has mandatory military service so these people have no choice but to serve and do as their told or they would likely be killed.  You can use your religious rhetoric on Iran’s leaders but to use it against people who in all likelihood have no choice is troubling to me.  But then again most of Huckabee’s positions are troubling to me.

Sentry at 164 & Greenfield to close in March

January 8, 2008

In what should come as no surprise to anybody who has set foot in there over the last few months, the BKT Sentry at 164 & Greenfield will close in March.  I was very excited when they announced they were taking over the former Jewel Osco property and when they first opened I kind of liked their store, especially the meat department.  But then I started looking at prices and they were a bit higher than Pick n’ Save, who is already known for high prices.  Plus the lack of customers resulted in longer turnover rates for produce and a dwindling selection of fresh seafood. I just stopped going there unless I wanted some of this take-and-bake bread that only Sentry carries.  Their meat is superior to Pick n’ Save, but Roberts is superior to both of them.  The sad thing is that I cannot imagine anything going in there at this point, especially not a grocery store.  Maybe they can put that Brunswick Zone entertainment center there since the City doesn’t want it at 164 and Cleveland.

The New Hampshire primary is today.   I think Obama wins and wins big.  I think that Hillary finishes second and her campaign stays alive for a couple more weeks.  On the Republican side, I have no clue.  I am going to pull this out of my ass….Romney wins, McCain is second, Huckabee third.
